Disaster Recovery Support Announced

The Queensland Government and local councils have swiftly responded to support community sport and recreation organisations impacted by the event. Immediate funding assistance is now available to help clubs recover and rebuild, ensuring community rugby competitions can continue to build towards another great season.

The Queensland Government has announced funding through the Disaster Recovery Program, offering eligible clubs up to $5,000 for immediate clean-up efforts. The funding is designed to provide quick relief, helping clubs restore their facilities and get back on their feet. This program also remains open for clubs in North Queensland that suffered damages during the January weather event that caused significant flooding across the region.

Additionally, Brisbane City Council has established a Community Clean-Up Fund, providing up to $7,500 to eligible community organisations. Clubs will need to complete a damage impact survey, including photographic evidence, to access this support.

Individuals personally affected by the cyclone can also access a Disaster Recovery Allowance through Services Australia. This financial support is available to help those facing loss of income due to the disaster.

Queensland Rugby Union’s General Manager for Community Rugby, Gaven Head, recognised both government bodies for their swift response to the event.

He said, “The turnaround for the establishment of these funding programs has been excellent, and a great showcase of both state and local government’s commitment to community sport.”

He continued, “Thankfully, community rugby has not been as significantly affected as originally projected; however, we would still encourage impacted clubs to follow the advice of their respective local government bodies to action any necessary repairs,”

Community clubs can continue to stay informed about updates through their relevant council’s emergency dashboards below:

Community clubs needing assistance with funding applications or recovery processes can also contact their Regional Rugby Manager or Club Development Manager for personalised support. Staff contact details are available via the Queensland Rugby website.
